5 little tricks to get new subscribers to your blog

Since I started this blog 2 years ago, there has been an option to subscribe. But about 2 months ago I really started to “exploit” subscribers as a source of recurring traffic. Since then, I have gone from having one new subscriber every two or three days to about 30 to 40 a day. This source of traffic already brings me between 15-25% of daily visits.

Subscriptions by email or RSS?

An RSS feed (What is an RSS feed?) makes it easier to read several blogs and to be aware when a new entry is published. In the case of an email subscription, the new post arrives directly in the reader’s inbox (see “How to implement an email subscription”).

I always try to get a subscription by email before RSS. It is important that you offer both options because not everyone wants to give you their email. Email is the most “intimate” way to reach your readers. There is no way out and as long as the subscription email is not deleted and there is no unsubscribe, your blog will always be a click away.

Create a series of articles

This post is part of a series of  articles. You can get the reader to stay up to date with upcoming posts and not miss them by subscribing to the blog. The series of posts should deal with a similar topic but from different angles.

2. Announce new posts on Twitter: in the same way that Twitter helps you generate new ideas for posts, you can use it to get subscribers. When you interest in brand you can refine it announce the post, add the link to the subscription to your blog. It works but don’t overuse it.

3. Add 2-3 sentences at the end of each post: another little trick is to add 2 or 3 sentences that appear separate from the post (see the end of this post for an example). Apart from adding the subscription link you can direct the reader to other posts aub directory in the same category.

4. Make use of plug-ins: with the help of cookies that are focused on users who come to your blog for the first time, you can better segment your audience and not “get in the way” of your already subscribed readers (something I still have to do). The plug-in is called “What Would Seth Godin Do” after the American marketing guru.

Integrate subscription links directly into the post

An integrated link into the post is an effective way to redirect users to the subscription page. I wouldn’t do it all the time if it makes sense to add it. Otherwise you would be too annoying and could cause the opposite effect of your already “converted” readers dropping out.
